Teaching methodology

I am the kind of educator who occasionally asks his students for feedback, i.e., to determine if they understand the lesson at hand.

Sir Rickson is a very good tutor! Although we only had a short time together, it was very productive! He was able to tailor fit the lectures to me so that I would understand not only what's needed to be understood but also gain deeper, conceptual understanding of the topics. He's a good teacher altogether that knows how to play with his own and his tutee's strengths and weaknesses. He's also passionate, with vigor and energy, to teach! Overall, my experience with him was very good.

Questions for You

Q: What areas of Chemistry do you specialize in, and what level of Chemistry do you usually teach?

My main focus is Biochemistry, more specifically protein chemistry of agricultural insect pests. I usually teach General, Inorganic, and Organic Chemistry.

Q: What types of resources or technology do you use to support your Chemistry lessons?

I use Zoom for holding online classes and Canva for editing the lecture slides needed in the tutorial sessions.

Q: How do you approach teaching Chemistry concepts to students who may struggle with Chemistry?

I go back to basics. Since chemistry has its own language, the student must first be familiar with how it is spoken, and so I usually conduct a refresher on the fundamentals before I begin my tutorial proper.

Q: Do you have experience with laboratory experiments, and how do you incorporate these into your Chemistry lessons?

Yes. I have a BS in Agricultural Chemistry, and several requirements to be fulfilled to earn the degree were to finish a huge load of Chemistry lab units. I show these laboratory experiments once the student has mastered the concepts behind in order for them to appreciate the phenomenon behind the observed reality of these lab exercises.

Q: What is your approach to teaching organic chemistry, and how do you make the subject engaging and accessible for students?

I own a molecular kit myself to demonstrate spatial topics, such as inversion, racemization, and conformation. I make it engaging by letting the student say their thoughts on what may be the answer to what I asked before I reveal the correct answer.

Q: How do you help students prepare for chemistry competitions, college applications, or other academic opportunities in chemistry?

We answer tons of practice problems together. Even though I am an educator at this point, I still have areas to improve on, and I make sure I am 100% present with my students as they prepare for their academic opportunities.
